Online Courses are Safe?

Hello, I'm Marilyn from California, I wanted to ask that are online courses safe or not because there are tons of websites providing online courses but how to believe one of them. One of my friends told me about the accreditation of online institutes which means if an online institute has accreditation from a well-known organization just like coursepedia accreditation it means the online institute is valid and 100% safe.
